Prawns Pepper Masala

The shrimp pepper masala is a simple, yet delicious dish.Prawns, as I mentioned earlier in any form, are our family favourite esp with kids. This is a real tasty, spicy lip-smacking version of prawns. You can serve it with idiappam, appam, chapathis or even rice. The best part of this recipe is it hardly takes anytime to cook & serve for a delicious dinner.Hope u all will give this a try & enjoy at home :-)

Preparation time ~ 10 minutes
Cooking time ~ 15 minutes
Serves ~ 3-4
Author ~ Julie
Ingredients
to marinate

prawns large size 15-20 cleaned or 350 g cleaned (refer notes)
crushed black peppercorns 1 tbsp
turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
hot chilli powder 1/2 tsp
kashmiri chilli powder 1.5 tsp
fennel powder 1/2 tsp
onion big 3, sliced
tomato 3-4 chopped
ginger-garlic paste 2 tsp
soy sauce, 2 tsp (optional)
salt to taste
coconut oil 2-3 tbsp
curry leaves 1–2 sprigs

Watch on YouTube -

Method
  • Wash & devein prawns, clean the prawns by rubbing lemon and salt.Leave aside for 10–15 minutes.Wash under running water and drain, keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a wok and fry the onions till golden brown.Add the curry leaves and salt. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté till raw smell disappears. Sauté until golden brown. Add spice powders on low flame.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and cook covered till tomatoes turn mushy and soft. Add the prawns and keep stirring on high heat and wait till it changes colour. Add 1-2 tbsp of water or no water (prawns will leave out water) and continue to cook.
  • Cover the lid & cook for another 5 minutes on medium-high heat. Uncover the lid, add the soy sauce, (if using) and the black pepper powder as mentioned in masala.
  • Adjust salt, dry up all the moisture and serve hot with chapathis or rice!

NOTES
* I have used fresh prawns here, you can use frozen ones.I have used 500 g prawns uncleared, will give 30 g cleaned.
* You can add or omit the last pepper powder in masala. This is a moderately spicy version, if you feel to reduce the spices then omit the last part of pepper powder.
* If you wish to omit the soy sauce, then feel free to do so.Adds a nice colour and flavour. I haven't added in the video recipe. Adjust the salt accordingly and also dry it up on high flame so that the fry becomes brownish.
