Chakkakuru Manga Curry | Jackfruit Seeds- Raw mango Curry

How many of you like chakkakuru/jackfruit seed dishes? I was a big fan of the mezhukuparetti especially as a kid when mom made them. The only time I get to see them was summer vacations, and mom used to pack a big packet of jackfruit seeds for us when returning from Kerala. But now adays,it's hard to find them unless you get the ripe jackfruit here.I wasn't lucky to get that too until noticed the frozen packet of jackfruit seeds.Though it doesn't taste the same as fresh, but it's good to tickle memories of dishes which you haven't had for long.I gave the mezhukuparetti a try too, but didn't get the same taste. So went ahead and made this curry. This curry was good to serve with rice, and all probably liked it because of the tangy flavors of mango. Do give this a try if you love jackfruit seeds or if you are discarding the seeds just like that !!

Preparation time ~ 10 minutes
Cooking time ~ 20 minutes
Author ~ Julie
Serves ~ 4-5
Ingredients
jackfruit seeds /chakka kuru 2 cups (cleaned and chopped)
raw mango 1/2 of 1
green chillies 3-4 (optional)
turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
salt to taste

to grind
coconut grated 1 cup
cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
chilly powder 1/2 tsp
garlic cloves,  2-3 small

to temper
mustard seeds 1 tsp
dry red chillies 2-3
shallots sliced 3
curry leaves few
kashmiri chilly powder 1/2 tsp
coconut oil 1tbsp

Method
  • If you are using fresh chakkakuru (jack fruit seeds) from scratch, rub your palms with oil to avoid staining. Then, remove the outer white cover and, using a sharp knife, scrub the inner brown layer. Then, cut in cubes or slices, place in a bowl of water.
  • Cook the chakkakuru(jack fruit seeds) by placing in a cooker for 1 whistle or add water, turmeric powder and chakkakuru in a pan and cook covered till the jackfruit seeds are half-cooked.(Omit this step if using frozen, thaw and use). I have done the open pot cooking method to cook in video, please refer.
  • I have used frozen chakkakuru(jackfruit seeds) that is cleaned and pre cooked. Heat a pan and add the cooked chakkakuru(jack fruit seeds) with a cup of water.Cook for 3-4 mins on medium flame as it is pre cooked. Then add cut raw mango slices, slit green chillies and salt.
  • OR I have used fresh chakkakuru in the video recipe, refer the link.

  • Cook for 5-6 mins until the mango slices become tender.
  • In the meantime, grind the grated coconut, cumin seeds, chilly powder, turmeric powder, garlic cloves to a smooth paste in a blender.
  • Add this paste to the cooked chakkakuru(jack fruit seeds) and mango slices.Mix well, add a cup of water and adjust salt.Cook on medium flame for another 3 mins until blended well.Switch off flame.
  • Heat another pan with oil. Splutter mustard seeds, add dry red chillies, curry leaves and sliced shallots.Fry till the shallots turn pinkish brown.Put off the flame and add the kashmiri chilli powder. Mix well and pour over the prepared curry.Keep covered for 5 mins and to mix well, serve with steamed rice.
Servings ~3-4 adults

NOTES
* You can even add drumsticks to this curry to make it more delicious. I added two drumsticks cut to the video recipe. Link above. If using drumstick, then reduce the chakkakuru to 1 cup.
* You can add the turmeric powder to the chakkakuru and cook.
* If the raw mango is not so sour, then you can add upto one raw mango. I added one in the video recipe. But if the variety of mango is sour, then add half of one.
