Homemade Rasam Powder (Step by Step Pics)

Rasam is a very simple curry made with a blend of spice powders that is perfect for digestion after a heavy meal.I love rasam a lot and had been making with store brought rasam powder invariably but finally got some time to try this homemade version of rasam powder.Believe me,its so flavorful and aromatic unlike the ready made packets and I have stopped buying the rasam powder packets. This is a lot more healthier too.Do give this a try and am sure you will enjoy, stay tuned for the rasam recipe with this spice blend too.

Ingredients

coriander seeds 3/4 cup
dry red chillies 20
hing/asafoetida 1/2 tsp
black pepper,whole 3tbsp
cumin seeds 3tbsp
chana dal 1/4 cup
toor dal 1/4 cup

Method
  • Heat a pan and dry roast the dals with red dry chillies.Wait till dal get slightly browned, keep a watch not to burn it up(keep stirring on low medium flame).Transfer to a plate.

  • In the same pan add the coriander seeds, black pepper and warm it up.At this point add the cumin seeds and give a quick toss.Switch off flame and leave to cool.
  • When cooled, add to a blender jar with hing powder.Grind until smoothly done.
  • Wait to cool down completely, transfer to a jar.Store over a month and use whenever making rasam.

Servings ~ a small bottle

NOTES
* The bottle used for storing should be clean and dry.'
* You can use a small piece of hing too instead of hing powder. If using the piece then first dry roast with red dry chillies.
